On Wednesday, April 13, 20 year old singer-songwriter Matthew Joel will release his newest LP, On Seeing.  The record will be self-released, through his Bandcamp, and features 8 brand new songs.

Here’s what Matthew says about the record: 

“On Seeing” came as a bit of a surprise. The album was originally meant to be a short collection of b-sides from a different group of songs I was working on. As I took a week off from work after touring in March and started to pour real time into the tracks the themes and ideas took a life of themselves and seemed to pave their own way to a finished product that I’ve found I’m really happy with. 

 This album is vaguely about what it means to see, the idea of sight representing experience, and perception in general. As a human being I’ve found my sight to be convoluted by my own brokenness; this group of songs documents a short part of the journey I’ve been on, one that I think all of us are traveling, seeking to have this sight restored—seeking to see clearly. The idea of clarity is hard to grip, I know I can’t—none of us can—see in an objective way, without bringing in personal ideas, experiences, and biases. But, rather than focusing on these differences and getting wrapped up in individualism, I have found there are times when, by some grace, my eyes are opened for me, and I’ve seen glimpses of what I believe is truly real—these are the things I wish to live for, and that’s a piece of what these songs are about. I’ve been told again and again, that Truth doesn’t really exist, but I’ve come to realize that this is both the folly and beauty of faith- -believing in a truth, even if you can’t see it clearly.
