Matthew Joel – Eyes pt. 2 (40 plays)

MP3: Matthew Joel - Eyes Pt. 2

It’s 6 AM.  We move through the fog and the blue, with only the power of two flashlights to guide the way.  With sleep wiped clear of our new eyes, and blankets wrapped tightly around our new bodies, we watch the newness of the sun as it dissipates the night into our faint memory.

I first heard Matt play this song at a small house show, earlier this year.  Seeing this song progress from a small, acoustic folk song, into a full, moving, powerful song is a sign of a greater progression.  Matthew Joel, a young songwriter at the tender age of 20, is one of the most promising young artists I’ve come in touch with.  His talents are as diverse as his tastes are; genre limitations will never be an issue for Matt.  ”The Sophomore Slump” just straight up doesn’t apply for him.

On Seeing is Matthew’s new LP, and Eyes Pt. 2 is one of the stand-outs on the record.  The weaving ups and downs showcase Matt’s ability to craft emotional post rock songs, as apparent on his last EP, The Rocky Mountains.  But what transcends Matt’s songwriting to another level is his ability to bring poignant lyrics and vocals to a genre that is so vocally absent.  The lyrics bring as much power as the music itself, and the pairing of the two creates the beautiful, emotional, moving record that is On Seeing.

On Seeing is available digitally on April 13, through Matt’s Bandcamp page.  There will also be a short run of homemade CDs, which will be available to purchase from Matt himself.
